In March 2025, Margherita Cloud Glenn, civilian diplomat and Senior Advisor for Soft Diplomacy, embarked on a symbolic assignment to Athens. The mission: to study the affective and material dimensions of soft power ┈┈➤ relational presence, diplomatic atmospheres and how objects operate as silent emissaries. ☆
Keeping in mind Austin’s idea that saying = doing, and Mauss’s insight that gifts oblige, Cloud observed rituals of decorum, personal codes of conduct, and the ambient theatre of diplomacy in motion. Meetings with dignitaries, cultural officials, and artists provided a setting, where gestures and encounters carried soft powered resonance.
As part of her research, Cloud is taking sensory and material notes of the city┈┈➤ its affective fabric: textures, surfaces and tonalities. These observations will inform future diplomatic artefacts:
